Our Story
In September, 2017, Natasha was referred to me while visiting family in Edmonton. In discussion, she mentioned that Inuvik is lacking holistic services in the town and Beaufort-Delta region. Surprised to hear this, I felt compelled to offer assistance. I offered to come up and see clients and help give them access to Massage and Craniosacral Therapy. Natasha then gracefully offered to not only house me for this time, but also offer her space to anyone seeking these services, help people book in and schedule. She has been a huge part of making this process easy and so beneficial for everyone. Without her generous offer to have me come to Inuvik, this clinic would not be a reality!
After two visits, I had an idea - an idea to open a home based facility in where I would seek out practitioners to travel to Inuvik on rotation to allow for consistent care for the citizens. I realized that I cannot keep up with the demand! Then the idea expanded! Why not all different kinds of practitioners? Not only Massage Therapists, I could find Chiropractors, Acupuncturists, Yoga Instructors... the possibilities are endless if the need is there! Since then, I have visited 8 times and have worked with many people that really need access to this type of health care for their mental, physical and emotional health and wellness.
I created a survey for the people of Inuvik to give me an understanding of a few points:
- What services people wanted the most.
- How often they would use these services.
- What their main intention/goal/reason for specific services.
- Whether they would use these services when their benefits ran out, or if they would use them regardless of benefits coverage.
The response was overwhelming. Everyone wanted this type of facility in the town. Everyone spoke to how important this would be for them. Everyone said they would refer friends and family that could benefit from it. The comments section brought me to tears. The need was almost palpable from the words I was reading on the screen. I could see how important this was to the people in this region of Canada. I knew I had to get this started! I came home and started consulting with business professionals around this idea, and how it could manifest into a reality for everyone.
This has been a long process, and I am sure its felt like an even longer process for the people of Inuvik. Having no access to someone that can help facilitate healing is a really hard thing to imagine. Having benefits that cover Chiropractic, Massage and Acupuncture and not being able to access that service is also a difficult factor that I am very aware of as well.
I am so happy to be able to do this for the Beaufort-Delta region. I have a million ideas about developing programs for the uninsured, distance care programs and helping support the citizens by creating jobs and supporting local artists. I am forever grateful and appreciative of the support that I have already received and the patience everyone has had in the process of creating this wellness facility. I am really looking forward to the day we open our doors.
Soon!
